a moment to give attention to good

let's inventory the bright spots

My friends…

It occurs to me—as I eavesdrop on conversations (a privilege of having no children and the snoopy curiosity of a four-year-old)—that so much of our attention is directed toward the things we don’t like. Even when we steer toward something we do like, there's often a quick hop back to the ick.

Why? Because we’re suspicious of the divine workings.
We say things like, “I don’t want to tempt fate!”

But the fate you’re “tempting” is the one you’re feeding. The one that’s receiving your attention. And attention is nourishment. Attention is power.

Is it really surprising that the world feels hostile and horrible when the dominant voices in media—those gabbing heads—insist we look at hostility and horror? It takes real effort to find a voice saying something kind.

So here I am.
Offering my voice and gabbing head.

This isn’t about ignoring the tragedies of our human drama.
Yes, they need our attention—but maybe not our persistent channeling.

Despair might not want your constant gaze. Maybe what it wants is your kindness.
Maybe pain is asking for your compassion. And maybe the best response is a loving hand—an offering that requires clarity of intention and inner capacity,
not the drained spiral of negative fixation.

We are also built to celebrate light.
To feel the relief of a sigh, a smile, a laugh.
To respond with awe, wonder, gratitude.

It’s easy to forget how comedy and tragedy keep each other in balance. We mourn until we grow tired of hiding our heads under a basket. Then, one day, something tickles us—a child at play, the absurdity of our life path, a moment of grace.

And we laugh again.

We all know the relief it brings.
And we know it won’t last forever.
The world does this too. It weeps, it laughs. It turns.

So take a moment with me:
Let’s inventory a few good things.

Give your attention to beauty.
To love.
To the trillions of stars calling us toward wonder.
To the 8 billion human souls traveling this life right alongside you—some taking their first breath, others their last.

And maybe… maybe…
you begin practicing a more generous attention. A sacred turning toward the good.
Not in denial of darkness, but as a way to promote balance.

If you’re into resistance, this is the path.
If you prefer peace, it’s the same.
If you’re seeking the divine,
this is the only path there is.

Because…

You are a good thing.
And your attention is worthy of good things.

I love you.
